How Gardening Can Enhance Creative Writing

If you’re looking to enhance your ability to write creatively, you might actually want to consider stepping away from your keyboard and out into nature, and more specifically, into your garden.

In her 2016 book, “Digging Deep: Unearthing Your Creative Roots Through Gardening, author and co-founder of the award-winning blog Gardening Gone Wild, Fran Sorin explores the connection between gardening and creativity. She explains that gardening can help foster creativity as this playful type of creating cultivates meaning.

In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Sorin expressed that her garden taught her several important values, such as patience, humility, connection, and playfulness. She stated, “There’s that theory, you take one thing and learn everything from it. I think you take nature and you can learn everything from it.”

By connecting with the natural world and engaging in more creative practices, such as gardening, it’s possible to become more creative overall. Gardens are a place where you can learn to problem-solve and find unique solutions to complications as well as how to remain patient and content with the process.

If you don’t have a garden to work in at the moment, there’s no time like the present to cultivate one. Since many of us are looking for more activities to do at home due to the pandemic, constructing a garden is a timely project.
